The 1880 Warriors Robotics Team of East Harlem Tutorial Program Secures a Coveted Spot at the World Championship Competition
East Harlem, NY - The Warriors of East Harlem, FIRST Robotics Team #1880, placed among the top 25 teams in the FIRST New York Tech Valley Regional Competition on March 23, 2024. Despite many team members being new to the competitive arena, the Warriors maintained a competitive edge throughout the event and secured the prestigious Engineering Inspiration Award.
This recognition underscores how the team and East Harlem Tutorial Program remain committed to promoting engineering appreciation within their organization and community.
"I'm pleased the students were recognized for their effort. It was gratifying to compete and see their work pay off in such a huge way," said Sebastian Gomez, Associate OST Robotics.
As a result of the team's success at the New York Tech Valley Regional Competition, the team has earned a coveted spot at the World Championship Competition in Houston, Texas, in April, with registration fees covered by NASA sponsorship. The team extends heartfelt gratitude to all supporters and eagerly anticipates representing East Harlem on the global stage.
Background:
In 2006, 20 curious students and two mentors decided they wanted to establish a robotics team as part of an extracurricular activity that would open doors for them to explore STEAM opportunities. Listening to our students, the East Harlem Tutorial Program (EHTP) partnered with Central Park East High School to start the East Harlem Tech team, now known as the 1880 Warriors Robotics Team. Our Robotics program prepares scholars from grades 5-12 to enter the exciting world of engineering through various hands-on projects ranging from 3-D design and robot assembly to computer programming.
