2023 at a glance

Bird’s Eye View of 2023 at East Harlem Tutorial Program, East Harlem Scholars Academies, East Harlem Teaching Residency, and Out-of-School Time Program

OUR MISSION

EHTP prepares students with the academic skills, strength of character, and emotional well-being to excel academically, lead in their communities, and realize their best possible selves. To read EHTP’s racial equity statement, please click here.

Our Programs

We work in partnership with students and their families as they harness the limitless potential of East Harlem.

In addition to operating a network of Pre-K - 12th-grade public charter schools, EHTP offers elementary, middle, and high school scholars in the community a variety of after-school activities, support for college scholars, and a teaching residency program to support new teachers from our communities.

Land recognition

We can only realize our best possible selves by building love and acknowledging our past and present. Our students and families need to hear our voices of love and support more than ever. We can’t support our students if we don’t support who they are and where they’re from. We celebrate that New York City is an immigrant city.

Because of this, EHTP acknowledges that it is located on ancestral Lenape homelands and recognizes the longstanding significance of these lands for Lenape nations past and present.

We are also conscious that New York City has the largest urban Native population in the United States.

We believe that historical awareness of Indigenous exclusion and erasure is critically important and are committed to working to overcome their effects in our own educational institutions.

Letter from Ingrid Sotelo

Dear East Harlem Tutorial Program Community,

I am honored to address you as the Interim CEO of the East Harlem Tutorial Program and the East Harlem Scholars Academies. Stepping into this role, I have been inspired by the dedication and achievements of our scholars, educators, staff, and community over the past year.

In the spirit of community service, EHTP has expanded its outreach by providing more services than ever before, including a food pantry, legal services, and free tax preparation assistance. Our commitment to serving and supporting the community remains unwavering, reflecting our dedication to fostering the success and well-being of our community.

East Harlem Scholars Academy High School’s first senior class graduation marked a significant milestone, and we took great care to ensure this group of scholars had an amazing experience and were well-prepared for the exciting chapters ahead. The anticipation for our new high school building located at 2017 1st Avenue, set to open in 2024, is palpable in the community and within our teams. This project symbolizes our steadfast commitment to providing the best possible learning environment for our scholars.

Our educators have exhibited unwavering devotion, ensuring the highest quality of teaching, learning, and care for our students. Amid challenges, the return of cherished traditions and events, such as community circles, back-to-school nights, and college fairs, brings joy and a sense of normalcy to our community.

Furthermore, we actively celebrated events within the community like Back to School, Create Love, and Build Love to bring individuals into our spaces. This deliberate effort aimed to foster togetherness and community spirit, creating a welcoming environment for all.

Reflecting on the past, we acknowledged the importance of unity during challenging times. After celebrating our 65th anniversary serving El Barrio, we remain resolute to our mission of ensuring that all East Harlem students achieve postsecondary success. Each scholar’s journey is an honor to be a part of, and I extend heartfelt thanks to our community for its continued support and contributions.

Sincerely,

INGRID SOTELO

Interim Chief Executive Officer, 2023

Celebrating Our First Senior Graduating Class

At East Harlem Scholars Academies, we believe our scholars deserve a great education in a challenging, nurturing, and inspiring environment, where they build the academic skills, strength of character, and emotional well-being to thrive in school and lead in their communities. Thanks to the significant Federal Replication grant, we were able to expand our high school classes and eventually open a new campus.

Cultivating El Barrio’s Teachers

The East Harlem Teaching Residency is a paid teacher residency that develops, supports, and certifies aspiring educators to become highly effective elementary teachers in East Harlem. In partnership with Hunter College School of Education, we prepare our Residents to affect educational outcomes in East Harlem and promote an equitable society.

We recognize the critical importance for students of color to have teachers of color, and we prioritize recruiting diverse candidates to the residency program.

Summer 2022

With 83% average attendance across all grades, Summer Boost provided 215 rising 1st- through rising 9th-graders with a robust curriculum with lesson-level detail; new club activities including music, pottery, and cultural arts; and two full-day field trips on Fridays.

HS Civic Project

Summer 2022 included a High School Civic Project in which 38 scholars participated in planting bee- and butterfly-friendly plants in an East Harlem garden and creating photographic documentation of their efforts.

Arts Programming

During the school year, we offered a cultural arts program for our elementary scholars that connected scholars to artists and artwork from the East Harlem community. They also enjoyed a private tour of the Museum of the City of New York.

Running Club

We had 22 very dedicated runners (90 percent attendance rate at training sessions) who participated in at least one of two 5k races and reduced their race times from about two hours to under one hour, including one runner who completed the May race in 19 minutes.

Samia Islam’s capstone project researched how age and location (in New York City) impact use of telehealth (conclusion: most telehealth users are age 50+ years living in Manhattan).

STEAM

A total of 129 scholars engaged in age- and team-based STEAM activities. EHTP was one of five organizations nationwide to receive a generous FIRST STEM Equity Community Innovation Grant to support our FIRST Robotics Competition team!

Postsecondary
Access

100% of OST’s seniors from our Postsecondary Access program were accepted into college. These scholars applied and received acceptances from 80 different colleges and universities from across the country!

The Postsecondary Success Team hosted their Welcome Home Dinner 2022 on November 22nd! This event is centered around welcoming back our college scholars from college as well as back to EHTP!

Postsecondary Success

public engagement

Supporting El Barrio

We use our social capital to amplify East Harlem’s community voices, share knowledge, and address pressing issues. We serve as a partnership hub and activate public support through volunteers, interns, and civic engagement initiatives involving our scholars and their families.

Volunteering & Internships

13,631 hours were volunteered overall with College Mentors performing 541 hours with OST seniors and 1st-year College Scholars. 117 internships were offered by organizations dedicated to working with our OST and EHSA programs.

Food
Pantry

In partnership with Common Pantry and CHiPS, our Public Engagement Team continued to operate our Food Pantry at our 2050 2nd Avenue location. This year, 250 families picked up 600 bags of food, averaging about 40 families served per month.

Annual
Turkey Drive

500 of our scholars’ families and East Harlem community members received turkeys and veggies from Butter Beans Kitchen, our lunch service provider, and 20 scholars volunteered to distribute food baskets to their neighbors for the holiday.

Emergency
Assistance Fund

During FY23, we provided almost $80,000 in support to 80 EHTP families, College Scholars, and staff who experienced financial hardship.

Community Tax Prep

To assist our scholars’ families with the costs and problem-solving of annual tax preparation, we hosted Single Stop at one of our locations. As a result, 209 community members completed tax returns for free, resulting in $343,522 in total refunds!

Coat Drive

By leveraging partnerships with Nightingale Bamford School and Columbia Grammar & Preparatory School, we collected and distributed over 75 winter coats to families in need.

future of ehtp

Aiming For Excellence & Growth

After 15 years of remarkable expansion, including the founding of five charter schools, creating a nationally recognized teaching residency, and completing the unprecedented $100 million Campaign for East Harlem, Jeffrey R. Ginsburg announced his transition from CEO, East Harlem Tutorial Program and CEO and Co-Founder, East Harlem Scholars Academies in spring 2023. He currently serves on EHTP’s Leadership Council.

During his tenure, Jeff led EHTP from a 200-student after-school program to a comprehensive Pre-K through College organization serving 1,500 scholars. He spearheaded initiatives such as the East Harlem Teaching Residency, College Scholars Program, and Team 1880 Robotics Team, all aimed at empowering students and fostering educational equity. Jeff's legacy of visionary leadership and commitment to community-building leaves an indelible mark on East Harlem and the entire EHTP community. We express our deepest gratitude for his unwavering dedication.

EHTP welcomed Marina Cofield as its new CEO, EHTP, and CEO, EHSA, effective February 1, 2024. A seasoned leader, Marina has a rich background in advancing racial and economic justice through education, including roles at Teach for America, KIPP Charter Schools, and NYC Public Schools. Her commitment to academic excellence and antiracism aligns closely with EHTP's core values, and she looks forward to collaborating with educators, staff, families, and partners to further the organization's mission.

As the CEO, Marina will work alongside Ingrid Sotelo, Interim CEO, who has transitioned into the organization’s COO. Ingrid is a native of East Harlem, and her leadership has played a vital role in the organization's growth and community impact. The Board of Trustees expresses deep appreciation for her leadership during the transition period and anticipates a fruitful partnership between her and Marina.

With this leadership change, EHTP remains dedicated to providing educational opportunities for our scholars and challenging systemic inequities in East Harlem.
