Dawan Julien, Managing Director of Out-of-School-Time Programs, was quoted in a recent post by the Institute for Children, Poverty, and Homelessness.
The reason [homeless students] were able to recover and persist is that they had support. If they didn’t have that, it would have been really hard for them to rebound. They’re all still in school, all in the program, and really engaged. With the most vulnerable students, it makes such a difference."
Homelessness can pose a huge academic challenge for students living in shelters. They also have higher school dropout rates compared to students in more stable living situations. With proper support, however, homeless students can succeed in and graduate from school at a rate equal to their peers.
