New York, NY - Following 15 years of extraordinary expansion, including the founding of five schools, a nationally lauded Teaching Residency and the completion of the unprecedented $100 million Campaign for East Harlem, Jeffrey R. Ginsburg, CEO of East Harlem Tutorial Program (EHTP) and Co-Founder of its East Harlem Scholars Academies, announced today that he will begin to transition from his role this fall. Effective January 1, 2024 Jeff will join EHTP’s Leadership Council of the Board as CEO Emeritus and Co-Founder of Scholars Academies.
Since becoming CEO in 2008, Jeff has led the expansion of EHTP from a 200-student afterschool program to a comprehensive PreK-College organization serving 1,400 students, putting them on track to serve at least 20% of all public school students in East Harlem by 2025. Over this period, nearly 80% of EHTP graduates have graduated college or are on track to graduate, a figure that matches the performance of the wealthiest quartile of students from across the country.
In addition to co-founding EHTP’s five East Harlem Scholars Academies, Ginsburg also established the East Harlem Teaching Residency, a nationally-recognized teacher training program operated in partnership with Hunter College. In 2012, he launched the College Scholars Program, which provides students with the support and resources needed to successfully navigate higher education and prepare for their careers. Currently, EHTP's College Scholars Program is on track to achieve a four-year college graduation rate that is eight times the national average for low-income households, effectively tripling the neighborhood's college completion rate since the program's inception.
He also co-founded Team 1880, EHTP’s award-winning Robotics Team, and was a key driver in forming EHTP's Emergency Assistance fund during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, which continues to provide thousands of meals and micro-grants to students and families in need.

From 2015 to 2022, Ginsburg led The Campaign for East Harlem, which invested an unprecedented $100+ million in the neighborhood, including two of the largest individual philanthropic K-12 gifts in New York history, generously provided by Marilyn & Jim Simons. With a continuing commitment to serve 20 percent of East Harlem's children by 2025, these funds facilitated the construction of its 2050 2nd Avenue education center, as well as the first new construction of a high school in the neighborhood in over 60 years. Construction of the new high school facility is on track to be completed by January 2024.
Over the past 15 years, EHTP has become a second home for Ginsburg as he centered his work and vision around the organization’s ‘Build Love’ ethos, cultivating partnerships with students, families and community organizations. As part of Build Love, he helped reorient EHTP’s fundamental mission around promoting antiracism and educational equity. Ginsburg effectively led EHTP's increased financial and human resources to realize a vision for community-based, anti-racist education that makes a multi-generational impact on students.
During the decade and a half that Jeff dedicated to growing and strengthening EHTP, he has become a stalwart in the East Harlem community, and has been honored by a wide range of community organizations. Jeff is a recipient of Crain’s “40 under 40”, New York Theological Seminary’s “Urban Angel” Award, and has been named a 2023 recipient of the McSilver Award for Social Justice by New York University. He also recently joined the Board of the New York Theological Seminary, SUNY SUTEC and serves as a member of Trinity College’s Board of Fellows.
Since Scholars Academies High School became a reality, Ginsburg has wanted to “graduate” alongside the founding high-school class this June. As they move on to their next chapter, it is important to him to support this milestone for this group of students, many of whom he has known since they were five years old.
Over the coming days, the Board of Directors will launch a comprehensive search for Jeff's successor. A leading executive search firm will be engaged to complete this task in a timely manner.
