A High-Performing School in East Harlem Needs Room To Grow. HELP THE CITY OF NEW YORK MAKE IT HAPPEN!
The EHTP family has been expanding – we doubled the size of after-school programs and started East Harlem Scholars Academies, K-12 public charter schools. We need your help to continue to expand and offer our services to more East Harlem youth. Here’s what you can do to help:
Attend The Public Hearing
Come show your support at the Public Hearing on February 27th at 6PM in the auditorium of the Jackie Robinson Educational Complex, located on 106th Street between Park and Madison Avenues. We need as many people as possible to join us in letting the Department of Education know how much East Harlem needs our schools to be able to expand in the Jackie Robinson Educational Complex.
Send an Email
Email City officials expressing your support of the co-locations of East Harlem Scholars Academy and East Harlem Scholars Academy II in the Jackie Robinson Educational Complex. This can be done on your own, at EHTP’s office (2050 2nd Avenue) or at East Harlem Scholars Academy (1573 Madison Avenue, 4th Floor).

Write a Letter
Write a letter to DOE Chancellor Dennis Walcott expressing your support (address and sample message is below).
Address for letter to Chancellor Walcott:
Chancellor Dennis Walcott
Deputy Chancellor Marc Sternberg
New York City Department of Education
52 Chambers Street
New York, NY 10007Dear Chancellor Walcott and Deputy Chancellor Sternberg,
I am writing to express my strong support for a temporary extension of the co-location for East Harlem Scholars Academy and a new co-location of East Harlem Scholars Academy II in the Jackie Robinson Educational Complex. East Harlem Tutorial Program, which operates East Harlem Scholars Academies, is an organization with a 55 year track record of success in the community and I have experienced first-hand how much East Harlem Tutorial Program and East Harlem Scholars Academies help East Harlem’s youth.
While Scholars Academy is a relatively new school, its results have been stellar and moreover, it is operated by EHTP which does have a long history of success. In Scholars first year, 4% of Kindergartners were reading at grade level when they started school and 96% were at or above grade level by the end of the year. Similarly, at EHTP’s afterschool programs, 96% of seniors have gone on to college in the past six years.
We need to provide these sorts of educational opportunities to more of East Harlem’s youth. East Harlem Scholars Academies and EHTP are true community partners – they give 100% admissions preference to East Harlem applicants. At Scholars Academy, three quarters of all students and 95% of this year’s kindergarten class are from East Harlem. At scale, Scholars Academies will offer over 1,000 seats to East Harlem youth. That Scholars Academies has already received over 250 applications for the 2013-14 school year is indicative of just how much we need these schools in our community.
I strongly encourage you to approve these proposed co-locations, so that even more of East Harlem’s youth may benefit from the excellent work of EHTP and Scholars Academies. Having both Scholars Academy schools at the Jackie Robinson Educational Complex will help to improve East Harlem’s educational opportunities and will provide much needed high-quality educational space for our local youth. Thank you for your consideration.
Sincerely,
