East Harlem Tutorial Program Public Statement On the Striking Down of Student Loan Forgiveness by the United States Supreme Court

New York, NY —Today, the United States Supreme Court ruled to strike down student loan forgiveness for millions of Americans, across the country. As a result of this ruling, without student loan relief, or a means to mitigate the unrealistic and out-of-control college loan debt crisis, students will face an uphill battle in repaying loans. This ruling effectively makes higher education harder to attain, and will push many of the thousands of students in our network who were relying on possible relief in order to move forward with their lives financially and professionally to rethink major life choices. Loan forgiveness was a meaningful opportunity to make accessibility to higher education more just, and shattering this opportunity, especially when taken alongside yesterday’s affirmative action decision, serves to compound the disadvantages young people must face in their journey to higher education.

This decision serves as yet another reminder of the disparities in our system, as it seems to further sideline communities like East Harlem when it comes to ensuring quality, affordable education. We desire for all students to be successful in their post-secondary lives, whether that means attending college or entering the workforce. EHTP remains committed to helping students in that process.

Today’s ruling emboldens us to continue the work of finding new funding sources and advocating for new legislative options for college affordability. EHTP and its post-secondary programs remain steadfastly committed to advising students on affordable post-secondary options.
