On May 24, 2017, East Harlem Tutorial Program (EHTP) brought together donors and friends to its 31st Annual Spring Benefit to celebrate its scholars and energize support for EHTP programs that will get them through college and realize their best possible selves.
Gretchen and Steve Burke, CEO of NBCUniversal, served as co-chairs of the event. They helped EHTP raise critical funds to support its core initiatives, including tuition-free after-school and summer programs, a growing network of public schools (East Harlem Scholars Academies), and the East Harlem Teaching Residency. On Tuesday, March 21, scholars, families and staff arrived at 2050 Second Avenue to the sight of our beautiful #BuildLove banner displayed on the side of the building. The EHTP school and after-school community had spent weeks working with legendary East Harlem artist, Manny Vega, to create this massive public artwork to show East Harlem and the nation that while we may have different backgrounds, we are brought together and made stronger by a commitment to inclusivity and our common humanity.
The five-story banner features the flag of Mexico, other flags representing our students’ nationalities, symbols of inclusion, and the hashtag #BuildLove. The flags are stitched together to celebrate the wonderful diversity of our community, New York City, and the United States. It shows our firm belief that we can only realize our best possible selves by building love and understanding.
“During this political climate, our students and families need to hear our voices of love and support more than ever. We can’t support our students if we don’t support who they are and where they’re from,” said Jeff Ginsburg, Executive Director. “We’re celebrating that New York City is an immigrant city.”
Support our scholars and families. Join our project to build love, and not walls, by using the template here to make your own sign and share it on social media using #BuildLove. (Or get creative and show how you #BuildLove any way you want!)
